meet Carmen, real-life dopamine queen

Hey! I’m Carmen (she/her) - writer of words, wearer of big earrings, teller of stories, and giver of rabble-rousing pep talks.

I’m a 'wear your heart on your earlobes' kinda gal with a chronic book buying habit and love of all things bright and colourful. Sometimes I reckon I was put on this earth to embolden people to be their most colourful and courageous selves - because that’s exactly what the world needs right now. 

Passionate about social justice, gender equity, and inclusion - I cut my teeth in human rights and community engagement, before co-founding The Global Women’s Project and working in non-profits to bring their world-changing work to life through campaigns and impact storytelling.

Founding CARMEN GET IT! in 2019, I now spend my days helping businesses inject creativity and colour into their content and brand communications. And I couldn’t be more smug (or grateful) for it.

how it started

When I was little, my Dad used to yell ‘Carmennnnnnnn…geddit’ whenever dinner was ready. Of course, growing up, it drove me b-a-n-a-n-a-s. Until one day, it just hit different and I thought: ‘Dad, you sly genius - what a perfect name for a business’! And now ya grrl’s got it trademarked and everything. That’s right…you can call me CARMEN GET IT!® folks.

After a decade in not-for-profit media communications and community engagement, I didn’t want to leave my values at the door and do a full corporate 180.

Thanks to B Corps and the social enterprise sector, I don’t have to. Combining people, planet and profit for a whole lotta purpose, I wanted to use my skills to contribute to business as a force for good.

I want to help shape the kind of change the world so desperately needs using the power of words, without compromising my values.

how it’s going

In a few short years, I’ve gone from freelancing on the kitchen table to working with some of Australia’s most stereotype-smashing and industry-redefining businesses and organisations (even got myself a really nice desk).

From fashion to finance and no-fuck giving entrepreneurs, I bring a strategic head and campaigner heart to inject some much-needed sass and storytelling into the hands of purpose-driven businesses. But that’s not all, folks.

In cahoots with a group of talented makers across the country, I also co-create a range of fabulous and feminist accessories and stationery that make a statement and spread the love and money.

Sure, it doesn’t always make sense to sell products and provide a service - but sometimes your dreams don’t make sense to anybody else. Each to their own, as long as you’re not hurting anyone else, as my Nan would say!

time for some rapid fire facts… 

If I was an animal, I would be: a lioness, all fierce and proud, and willing to get my paws dirty.

If I was a legit snack, I would be: Cheese Doritos or a Curly Wurly.

Drink of choice: Dr Pepper, don’t @ me.

What gets me out of bed: helping people express themselves.

What keeps me up at night: injustice, inequality and what earrings to wear the next day.

Spiritual gurus: Gloria, Baddie, Vandana, and my 100 year old Nan (RIP, Queen Pauline).

Superpowers: making systemic issues relevant to people’s everyday lives; making boring topics more fun and relatable.

My current (wo)mantra: receipts or it didn’t happen.

You might be surprised to learn: I despise cooking, my plants are lucky to be alive, and I’m a mad keen footy fan.

Favourite people to work with: those shaking up their industry; keen to take risks with their brand personality and let their weirdness out.

What I’m working on right now: a website refresh for a women’s not-for-profit, and an impact communications framework.
